It is said that in Scicli, in the caves near the San Matteo promontory, there lived a serpent. It was by no means a docile creature. It guarded the boundaries of the land and slithered among the olive trees like a sacred shadow. They called it the Serpent of Desire and Destiny, for it appeared in moments when the city found itself in distress. One day, a foreign threat arrived from the sea. The invaders landed; they advanced through the hills, destroyed villages, and plundered churches. The terrified people took refuge in prayer and asked for help from their only true strength: the Madonna delle Milizie, the Holy Virgin protector and warrior. The night before the battle, while the full moon shone in the motionless sky, the serpent left its den for the first time. It is told that it coiled itself among the rocks of the hill, and at its passage, the earth trembled. At sunrise, the Madonna delle Milizie appeared on her horse, armed with a sword and glowing with light. She stopped before the serpent and stared into its eyes. Instead of attacking, it bowed. In that moment, a miracle occurred: the serpent was enveloped in an incandescent glow and its body transformed into pure gold, its scales appearing as if carved by flames and wind. It remained there, motionless, like a sacred seal. The Madonna defeated the invaders and the grateful people engraved that scene in their hearts and upon stone. Today, only those who look closely among the Baroque decorations of the palaces can still catch a glimpse of the sign of that golden serpent, its zigzagging body a mark of respect and devotion. Now, that serpent lives on in the form of jewelry, a symbol of protection, strength, and pure desire. Because every creature, even the most feared, can change its destiny when it meets the right light.
